Kegondi Water Project Brings Relief to West Sabatia Residents

In a transformative leap toward climate resilience and improved access to clean water, the Kegondi Water Project in West Sabatia Ward, Vihiga County, has officially reached 100% completion and is now fully operational—bringing clean and safe water directly to 100 households.

Implemented by the County Government of Vihiga through its Directorate of Climate Change, the project forms part of the broader Vihiga County Climate Change Resilience Projects aimed at building sustainable, people-centered solutions to environmental and development challenges.

A Lifeline for the Community

The Kegondi Water Project is already making a difference in the daily lives of local families who, until now, relied on unreliable or distant water sources. With clean water now flowing directly into homes, residents are experiencing improved hygiene, reduced burden of water collection—especially for women and children—and greater potential for small-scale farming and local enterprise.

Project Highlights

The project incorporated modern, energy-efficient infrastructure designed with sustainability in mind. Key works completed include:

  • Construction of a 50m³ sump and direct connection to a local spring source
  • Installation of a solar-powered pumping system, cutting operational costs and reducing carbon footprint
  • Construction of a power house to secure and support solar operations
  • Laying of a rising main to deliver water from the source to the elevated tank
  • Erection of a 50m³ elevated steel tank mounted on a steel tower for efficient water pressure and storage
  • Installation of a comprehensive distribution system bringing water to 100 households

Investing in Climate-Smart Infrastructure

This initiative is a clear example of climate-smart infrastructure that not only addresses current water access issues but also prepares the community to better cope with climate variability. By using solar energy to power the water system, the county is reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring uninterrupted water supply.

Awaiting Official Commissioning

While already in use, the project is set to be officially commissioned in the coming days, marking a proud moment for West Sabatia Ward and the larger Vihiga County. It’s a testament to what can be achieved through local leadership, targeted investment, and community-focused development.

A Model for Other Counties

The Kegondi Water Project showcases how devolved governments can lead in climate action and service delivery at the grassroots level. Vihiga’s approach combines technical expertise, renewable energy solutions, and direct community impact—offering a model for other counties in Kenya and across the region.
